Along with the storm of startup layoffs both in Indonesia and globally, bad news is circulating in the form of layoffs at Shopee.
What really happened and what about the condition of Shopee in Indonesia?
Shopee is indeed rumored to be terminating the employment relationship (PHK) of its employees in several of the company's operational countries.
This news emerged from an internal memo sent by the CEO of Shopee, Chris Feng, which was quoted by a number of international media.
The memo states that layoffs will be carried out for employees who work in the ShopeeFood and ShopeePay divisions, in a number of operational areas, including Southeast Asia.
Responding to this issue, the Executive Director of Shopee Indonesia, Handhika Jahja, ensured that Shopee Indonesia was not included in the adjustment steps taken by Shopee, the center for Southeast Asia.
"The adjustment steps taken in certain segments and markets will certainly not involve Shopee Indonesia," said Handhika Jahja in an official statement, Wednesday (15/6/2022).
Instead of layoffs, Handhika said that his party is still recruiting employees to develop its business in the country.
"We continue to recruit the best talents to develop our team."
"Shopee Indonesia is also still actively recruiting digital talents, through the Sea Labs Indonesia program which was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in March 2022," he said.
Shopee Indonesia itself claims to employ more than 20,000 employees covering various business lines of the company such as Shopee, ShopeePay, and ShopeeFood.
More than 50 percent of its employees have even been claimed to have joined since the pandemic began.
Layoffs in Mexico to Spain
In addition to Southeast Asia, a memo from Shopee CEO Chris Feng also stated that Shopee would lay off some of their teams in Mexico, Argentina, and Chile, as well as the team that helped Shopee's expansion in Spain.
The Shopee page in Spain will even be stopped on June 17.
As for customer transactions that have not been completed, the company will continue to assist them until they are completed.
According to the memo, this step was taken by Shopee to adjust their resources and operational activities in a number of Shopee's operational markets.
"Given the concern that the global economy is showing uncertainty, we believe that it is important to make corporate adjustments to improve efficiency and focus on the resources we have, even though this is difficult to do," said Feng, quoted by StraitsTimes, Wednesday (15/6/). 2022).
Feng continued that those affected by layoffs had been informed of the decision, as well as other changes in Shopee, earlier this week.
