Apple Tries Face ID with Masks for Latest iOS Updates
1/28/2022
Apple appears to be testing a feature that allows users to access Face ID to unlock the phone even while wearing a mask .
According to a photo shared by Brandon Butch on Twitter the first beta for iOS 15.4 will bring up a screen asking if the user wants to be able to use Face ID even when wearing a mask.
Unfortunately, that feature will only be available if you have the latest device.
According to the screenshot, Apple says that " the iPhone can recognize unique features around the eye area to authenticate" but warns that Face ID will be more accurate if you set it up without a mask.
However, not everyone can take advantage of this special feature. The Verge confirmed that the feature works on the iPhone 12, and 9to5Mac reports that it's only available on the iPhone 12 and 13 series. The feature doesn't appear to work on the 2018 iPad Pro.
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, people (and organizations like the New York City MTA) have asked Apple to add a way for users to unlock their iPhones while still wearing a mask.
Apple has introduced various updates to address this. iOS 13.5 will detect that you are wearing a mask and can automatically ask for your passcode instead of trying to authenticate your face.
Meanwhile, iOS 14.5 lets people with Apple Watch use Face ID while wearing a mask. That appears to be open to anyone wearing a mask, as long as the Apple Watch is close enough to the phone.
