Getting to know Flurona, When Flu and Covid-19 Come Together

Recently, flu has made headlines in various media. Although this sounds foreign, actually the term flurona is not new. This is a term coined to describe what happens to someone who positive for the flu and tests Covid-19 together.

"Both are common, so it's only natural that several people will be infected at the same time," said Dr. And Barouch, director of the Vaccine Research Center of Virology and at Beth Israel Deaconess medical Center in Boston as reported by Good Morning America .

Experts emphasize that flu is not a new disease and it is also not a new variant of Covid-19. The flu virus and the SARS-CoV-2 virus come from two very different virus families. Scientists are not worried about two viruses mixing together to create a new virus.

There are various types of viruses that are capable of infecting humans. The viruses that cause the flu and Covid-19 are two examples, but there is also HIV, the chickenpox virus, the rabies virus, the common cold, and many others.

There is always the possibility for one person to be infected with two or more different viruses at once. With flu season coinciding with the spike in new Covid-19, there is a greater chance that a handful of people will test positive for both viruses at the same time.

Doctors refer to this case as coinfection. While uncommon, last year's flu season also saw multiple cases of flu and Covid-19 in the same person at the same time.

"This is not a big problem for us because of the low level of influenza circulating in the community," said Dr. Jonathan Grein, director of Hospital Epidemiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on the hospital's website. Cedars-Sinai said it recently saw one case of mild coinfection.

"Obviously it's not good to be infected with two viruses rather than one, but there's no clear indication that this is a particularly bad combination," Grein added.

Flurona itself has been reported in a number of countries, such as Israel, Peru, and the United States. One case of flu in Peru was experienced by an 87-year-old grandfather with comorbidities who were not vaccinated against the Corona virus, and even ended up dying. While in Indonesia the Ministry of Health has not found any cases of this.

The Ministry of Health has yet to find a case of flu in Indonesia. But just in case you don't get infected, getting flu and Covid-19 vaccinations can be a way to avoid this disease. In addition, wearing masks in crowded places and washing hands. (*)
