Android Messages Beta Now Can Translate Reactions from iOS Messages
Google is widely rolling out the new Google Messages for beta users. The goal is for the Android messaging app to correctly interpret the emoji reactions sent from the iOS Messages app.
According to Droid-Life , the feature appears to be active in the app version 20220121_02_RC00, but it's not working for every user yet. Although not guaranteed to work on all phones, The Verge managed to try it and it works on Oppo Find X3 Pro. It looks better than the initial features that started appearing last November.
The feature aims to fix a long-standing issue that could affect SMS chats between iPhone and Android . The feature was first rumored in November last year , but never received official confirmation from Google. The launch is also random, most people didn't see it launched until recently.
Previously iPhone users who sent reactions via Android messages with emojis would appear differently on the Android system. Android users typically see the reaction being sent as a separate text message, resulting in confusion and unnecessary text translation.
For example, a thumbs down emoji like the example above will be sent by a separate text message to Android users. So, if you send a thumbs down to your Android user friend, what appears is not a thumbs up emoji, but the words "dislike" the message.
But now, the new beta version of the app treats emoji reactions the same on both operating systems. However, there are inconsistencies between how reactions are represented on each operating system.
As 9to5Google , thumbs up and thumbs down reactions are similar on both platforms , but iOS's "haha" reaction turns to "face with tears of joy" on Android, while "heart" becomes "smiley face with heart's eyes."
Meanwhile, “exclamation mark” becomes “face with open mouth” while “question mark” becomes “thinking face.” That's actually a minor difference, but it can lead to very different interpretations of the meaning of the reaction.
The new "Show iPhone reactions as emoji" feature has been enabled by default in the Google Messages beta app, in the Advanced menu at the bottom of Settings.(*)
