Intel has a new innovation in blockchain . The US company created a new chip designed to mine cryptocurrencies .
According to Intel, the company plans to "develop the most energy-efficient computing technology at scale." The reason is, crypto is currently a new challenge for energy waste and is claimed to be aggravating environmental problems.
-focused chip crypto is named “ blockchain accelerator .” The chips are scheduled to start shipping in late 2022. Two companies have ordered the technology, including bitcoin mining firm GRIID Infrastructures and Block, fintech formerly known as Square.
“We hope that our innovation will deliver a blockchain that has over 1000x better performance per watt than mainstream for SHA-256-based mining,” said Raja Koduri, Intel senior vice president. He was referring to hashing algorithm used to generate Bitcoin and a number of cryptocurrencies .
Intel said more information about the chip will be announced at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, which begins on February 20.
mining cryptocurrency has become a major concern, and Intel's new chips may be one important effort to address it.
Mining rigs that consume a lot of electrical energy usually come from coal and natural gas power plants which are considered to be damaging to the environment. It can also lead to higher electricity costs and more significant power outages.
US lawmakers and countries around the world have even raised the issue at the national government level, debating how to tackle the increased energy consumption associated with crypto . Countries are even asking bitcoin companies to disclose how much energy they consume.(*)
