Gadgets and laptops in Europe will be required to use USB-C, fast charging for cellphones is also the same

After a long discussion, the European Union Commission (EU) has now agreed to make a law on the USB Type-C port standard for electronic devices sold in Europe.

After being ratified later, the law will only be effective 2 years after its issuance, which is around July-September 2024.

These are the types of electronic devices in Europe that are required to use a USB C port starting in 2024:
  1. Smartphone
  2. Tablet
  3. Digital camera
  4. Earbuds/ True Wireless Stereo
  5. E-readers
  6. Headphones and headset
  7. Portable game console
  8. Portable speakers
  9. Keyboard
  10. Mouse
  11. Laptop
Especially for laptop vendors, they are given longer time, which is about 3 years and 4 months to comply with these obligations, or starting in 2025.

Currently, several laptop products such as Apple, Dell, Asus, and Lenovo have begun to be given a USB-C port.

Meanwhile, Android smartphone vendors have now switched to using a USB-C port, although there are still a few that include a Micro USB port.

Apple is different, because the iPhone still uses the Lightning port.

However, it is clear that in the next 2 to 3 years, all brands of electronic devices in Europe must use a USB Type-C charger.

Then what is the purpose of the USB-C charger port rule.

It turns out that the goal is to protect the environment, which is to help reduce e-waste.

According to a member of the EU Parliament, Malta Alex Agius Saliba, the number of unused charger adapters is estimated to be 11,000-15,000 tons of electronic waste per year.

Imagine if all electronic devices use a USB C port, then the owner only has one charger that can be used for several devices.

So there's no need to buy a new charger when buying a new gadget, as reported by The Verge.

If calculated, the use of USB-C for all electronic devices in Europe will save up to 250 million euros (equivalent to Rp. 3.8 trillion) per year, namely the loss of the cost of buying a charger.

speed Fast charging will be the same

Not only the USB C port, fast charging speeds will also be the same.

In fact, as we all know, vendors have been competing hard to develop fast charging features on their smartphones.

Day by day the faster the battery charging time, even becoming a championed feature.

For fast charging technology, Xiaomi currently has 120 watts and 200 watts of HyperCharge, Oppo has SuperVOOC, and Realme has UltraDart.
