Imitating Android, Apple Announces Virtual RAM Feature on iPadOS 16 Based on M1

Apple introduced a myriad of new features in iPadOS 16 at the WWDC 2022 event Tuesday morning (7/6).

iPadOS 16 focuses on delivering features that can increase user productivity.

The features that Apple brings in iPadOS 16 are designed to speed up and simplify the work of users.

One of the features of iPadOS 16 that is in the spotlight of users is the virtual RAM which is expected to have a major effect on the performance of iPad .

Virtual RAM allows apps on the iPad Pro and iPad Air based on the M1 chipset to use the internal memory as RAM.

This feature is an extension of the RAM optimization feature in iPadOS 15,

Previously on iPadOS 15 certain apps could use up to 12GB of RAM on the iPad Pro M1 which has a total of 16GB of RAM.

With iPadOS 16 and virtual memory swapping, Apple has significantly increased the amount of memory apps can use by leveraging iPad's internal storage.

For the iPad Pro M1 model, apps can use up to 16GB of RAM to handle heavy workloads.

Then, Virtual RAM is also available for the iPad Air 5 which is powered by the M1 chipset.

In the footnote section of the iPadOS 16 , Apple explains that this feature is also available for the 25GB iPad Air 4.

However, it is most likely that the virtual RAM support for the iPad Air 4 is a typo because the model is not supported by the M1 chipset.

This Virtual RAM supports the presence of Apple's superior feature on iPadOS 16, namely the Stage Manager.

Apple says that Stage Manager relies on the Virtual RAM feature and can only be used by iPads based on the M1 chip.

Currently, the beta version of iPadOS 16 is available for developers.

Apple plans to launch the public beta version of iPadOS 16 in July and launch iPadOS16 to general users by the end of this year.
