Credit card number

Familiarity with how the number of each type of credit card is structured can help us identify valid cards versus counterfeits. In addition, it is important that we know where the number is on the card if we are asked to provide details to perform online transactions and also that we understand what the 3 digits that appear on the back of the card are.
What is a credit card?

A credit card is probably the most common payment method in the world. Although there are countries where cash is still used more than credit, it is likely that over time their number will also decrease. The reason for this is that credit cards are considered a convenient, reliable, secure and accessible means of payment. In addition, the state and the finance authorities have a clear interest in each and every one of us knowing what our credit card number is so that it will be easy for them to track transactions and prevent money laundering. In recent years, in addition to means of payment, credit companies also offer services such as credit card loans , insurance and benefits to expand their income.

What is the disadvantage of a credit card?

The problem starts when we take the credit card for granted. In the short term, this may cause us to be light on the trigger and make transactions that may not be the commitment of reality. In the long run, it is not certain that we will be able to recognize the difference between our card and other cards. If we work in customer service or at the cash register of a business, for example, it is important that we know how many digits are on different credit cards - in order to make sure that the card presented to us is indeed real and not fake.

How many digits are there on a different credit card?

Israeli credit cards differ slightly from international credit cards in terms of the number of digits on them. For example, a Visa card has 16 digits, Diners cards have 14 digits and American Express cards have 15 digits. For comparison, Isracard cards issued in Israel have 8 or 9 digits - but cards from abroad called Mastercard or Eurocard already have 16 digits.

In general, it can be said that all credit cards that are not from the Isracard company have 11-19 digits. On the other hand, Isracard cards have a lower number of digits as mentioned.

Card Type number of digits
Cards issued by the Visa credit company 16
Cards issued by Diners credit company 14
Cards issued by the credit company American Express 15

Where is the credit card number on the card?

The location of the number is on the front of the card, on the side where the cardholder's personal details and bank account details appear. You can tell that this is the front of the card if it says first and last name, bank account number, branch number, bank number and so on. This is the side where the number appears that you are supposed to give if, for example, you make a telephone transaction or purchase products online.

It is important to be careful of trying to get a credit card number out of us on the sly. If, for example, they call apparently from a local authority and want to know what the number is in order to oblige us to pay the property tax, we must first make sure that it is a reliable party.

To do this, it is better to ask that party to wait for us to get back to him in an outgoing call. In this case, of course, we would like to make the outgoing call to the official municipality hotline and only then provide the credit card details, but it is possible to work in a similar way with the other private or public entities as well.

It may be that in some cases we actually want to partially hide the credit card number, such as for example if we are in a crowded and busy environment. In addition, hiding the number is relevant if we make transactions from crowded places abroad. In such cases, we should not reach a situation where all passers-by see the card number, even if it has a relatively high amount of digits, because from there on it will no longer be so complicated Get the rest of the credit information.

Where is the name and validity of the card?

The name is on the front of the credit card, while the validity is sometimes on the front and sometimes on the back. You can tell that it is the validity period and not a normal number by means of a slash that separates the month from the day. In most cases, the date is specified in a format of two digits for the month and two digits for the day only (such as XX/YY), but there can be cases where all the digits are also specified - such as XX/YYY.

It is impossible to complete various transactions over the phone or online without providing details about the validity of the card. In terms of security, the purpose of this restriction is to make sure that those giving the details are indeed the true owners of the card.

What are the 3 digits on the back of the card?

The numbers on the back of the card, what is known in the professional parlance as CVV, have an important meaning for the credit company. In practice, this is a service code that the company uses to indicate the type of currency in which the card operates, the type of card itself, the type of credit and various digits that are inside. The full name is Card Verification Value and from that you can understand that it is a type of security code.

The security code does not have to have 3 digits, because American Express cards, for example, have 4 digits. However, it is printed on every type of credit card without exception. Using Card Verification Value you can achieve several goals:

  • Add identification and security measures
  • prevent fraud
  • Protect cardholders
  • To meet the standard set by the leading credit companies
Notwithstanding the above, the use of the CVV code is optional and in some transactions it is not requested. In principle, any type of credit card can be charged even without it, so a lot depends on the procedures of the business. In addition, you should know that the code is usually not saved. Therefore, even if you break into the databases of the stores where we provided the details, it is likely that the Card Verification Value will not appear there.

The additional layer of protection that you get through Card Verification Value is intended as mentioned mainly for the credit companies. She guarantees that in the event that they break into the databases of the credit companies to leak card numbers, they will not find this detail there. That's why the information about the CVV is not saved anywhere and that's why it's also important to keep it independently.
