Even so, that does not mean cycling on the road is not safe. There are some simple things we can do so that while cycling the trip remains safe and also does not endanger others.
Reported by Popular Science , here are some simple tips for those of you who are into the hobby of cycling, especially for those who are just starting out or haven't ridden a bicycle for a long time.
1. Obey traffic rules
Remember, the bicycle is a vehicle, so it must be on the road. That means, drivers must also follow the same rules on the road as other vehicles, for example stopping when there is a stop sign and a red light, using a sign when going to turn, to driving on the far left.
In essence, understand the cycling rules that apply and in which lane to ride.
Bikes should also be equipped with lights if you plan to ride in the dark, at dawn or dusk. At the very least, use white lights up front and red lights at the back. If you want to be safer and can see more clearly in low light, add a rechargeable light or reflective stripe to the bike frame or wheel and wear a reflective shirt or bag.
Even though it is a vehicle, according to the regulations in force in Indonesia, bicycles are allowed on the sidewalk. However, cyclists must also be able to position themselves because the priority on the sidewalk is for the disabled and pedestrians, and finally bicycles.
2. Drive safely
In addition to obeying traffic rules, another important thing that should not be underestimated is wearing a helmet. Just like motorcycle riders, helmets on cyclists also function as head protection so that the risk of fatal injuries is smaller.
Driving should also be careful and not act recklessly. This is because cyclists who move recklessly can make other road users nervous.
Doogie Roux, a micromobility consultant and cyclist based in Houston and Tulsa, says it means staying in your lane, not going in and out in heavy traffic, and making appropriate hand signals when doing something.
Always be alert when on the highway, especially in high-traffic areas. Making yourself more “visible”, for example through clothing, lights, or movement, can also help other motorists be aware of your presence.
"Look ahead. Much can be avoided by seeing the dangers and situations before reaching them. Watch them early, be proactive, and be careful,” Roux added.
Not only on moving vehicles, you also have to be aware of parked vehicles, especially cars. The reason is, it is not uncommon for cyclists to have accidents because the car door is suddenly opened because the driver does not pay close attention to the road.
Therefore, try to keep a distance of a few meters when there is a car parked and pay attention to the windows and rearview mirrors to see if there is someone in them who might be causing problems.
You also have to be aware of cars that stop or slow down. Because, not a few accidents that occur at the intersection. Not infrequently we see motorists who can't wait to switch to the bike lane and almost or even hit a cyclist. Therefore, stay alert.
3. No need to worry too much
Even though all the security and safety rules have been implemented, it is natural that sometimes we still feel worried when driving on the highway. Roux recommends starting slowly and riding with other people to feel more comfortable and build confidence.
Make motorcyclists see you as human. Drive with confidence because you too have the same right to be on the road as they do. But that doesn't mean that you also feel that you have to be privileged and you can be reckless.
If you start to feel uncomfortable with what's around you, take a break. When you feel good or arrive at your destination, think about what makes you feel insecure and how to deal with it. For example, you can try alternative routes that already have bicycle lanes. Do what is right for you.
So, those were some tips for those of you who are just starting to like cycling. Oh yes, for you drivers of other vehicles, don't forget to share the road with cyclists too. Keep a distance of about one meter from the mirror with the cyclist to keep everyone safe.(*)
