5 Covid-19 Booster Vaccines Get BPOM Permits, what are they?

The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has officially issued an emergency use permit (EUA) for five booster booster vaccines or vaccines to be used in Indonesia. The five types of vaccines are Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, CoronaVac, and Zifivax.

For the type of vaccine that received EUA this time, Head of BPOM Penny K Lukito in a press conference on Monday (10/1) explained that it would be used for vaccination programs booster homologous and heterologous .

Homologous means giving 1-3 doses of the same type of vaccine. While heterologous means the third dose is different from the vaccine that has been given at doses one and two.

Penny explained that the CoronaVac, Pfizer, AstraZeneca vaccines would be used for homologous programs. While Zifivax for heterologous and Moderna for homologous and heterologous. The CoronaVac vaccine used is the one produced by PT Bio Farma (Persero) which uses Sinovac vaccine as raw material.

For administration, the CoronaVac and Pfizer vaccines will be given in one dose for ages 18 years and over six months after they have received their complete primary vaccination. Then AstraZeneca will also be given one dose for those aged 18 years and over.

Meanwhile, Moderna will be given as a booster heterologous with a half dose for those who received complete primary vaccinations of Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and AstraZeneca. Mentioned if booster this can increase immunity up to 13 times in subjects 18 years and over.

Then Zifivax will be a booster heterologous for individuals receiving the primary vaccines of Sinovac and Sinopharm. It is explained that the third dose will be given 6 months after complete primary vaccination and can increase antibodies to more than 30 times.

On that occasion, Penny also explained that the granting of a vaccine permit booster has received the blessing of the National Immunization Expert Advisory Committee (ITAGI).

The government itself has planned to provide vaccines booster starting January 12 with two schemes, paid and free. The covid19.go.id website explains that vaccines booster free will be given to the elderly, BPJS Health Contribution Assistance Recipients (PBI), and other vulnerable groups. While others will be charged independently alias not free. (*)
