AirPods Cause Malignant Cancer? Let's check the facts
For Gen Z, AirPods are more than just a wireless device for listening to sound from a smartphone. This tool has also become a part of fashion . No longer limited to Apple , similar wireless devices have also been produced by other electronics manufacturers.
But some time ago, a two-minute video appeared on YouTube and Facebook. This video explains if AirPods cause malignant cancer to brain damage.
The post states that the bad effect of AirPods is caused by the power of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation (EMF) that emerges from the device. It is said to affect biology and health.
The video also reveals that scientists are petitioning the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN), to encourage the development of more protective EMF (exposure to electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields) guidelines on health issues.
In fact, according to EMF Scientist, 200 scientists wrote an appeal to the WHO and the United Nations in 2015 asking them to implement stricter guidelines that limit EMF exposure from wireless devices. The petition makes no specific mention of AirPods or even wireless listening devices.
The products listed as examples of EMF transmitting devices in the petition are cellular telephones and their base stations, Wi-Fi, broadcast antennas, as well as electrical and infrastructure devices used in the delivery of electricity that generate very low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF EMF).
Meanwhile, via Reuters, Apple has also explained that AirPods and other wireless devices from Apple meet all applicable radio frequency exposure guidelines and limits.
In the United States, there is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which oversees radio frequency energy in specific absorption rates (SAR), at the manufacturers of mobile phones. The SAR limit for each device is 1.6 watts per kilogram.
Based on the FCC evaluation report in 2019, AirPods products have a SaR of 0.071 and 0.095 watts per kilogram and for AirPods Pro, have a SAR of 0.097 and 0.072 watts per kilogram. When combined, the amount is still smaller than the SAR limit set so that it is declared safe.
The product also meets the requirements of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), a non-profit organization that recommends the public not to be exposed to more than 2 watts per kilogram.
ICNIRP told Reuters that as long as the AirPods adhere to their guidelines – and they do – there are no health issues to worry about because a recent evaluation of the scientific literature shows there is no scientific evidence that EMF causes cancer.
WHO also revealed the same thing to Reuters . "There is currently no definitive evidence that the low-level electromagnetic fields used in Apple AirPods will cause cancer," they explained.
So, in conclusion, the AirPods have complied with national and international security regulations. Moreover, the radiation produced from AirPods is also relatively small so it is still safe for health. That means, the claim that this Apple wireless device causes cancer is not true, aka a hoax. (*)
