Pfizer Will Apply for Covid Vaccine Permits for Toddlers

Pfizer and its partner BioNTech applied for permission to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to authorize vaccine for children under five as a two-dose regimen. They will also continue to research how well the three doses worked.

According The New York Times , a source said federal regulators plan to review the data in the hope of granting emergency use permits for the Covid vaccine in young children. End of February at the latest.

If Pfizer waits for data on the three-dose regimen, new data could be submitted by at least the end of March. That means vaccines for that age group may not get approved until late spring.

Scott Gottlieb, a Pfizer board member and former FDA commissioner, told CBS News that the vaccine may be legalized as early as March for the youngest age group. This development was first reported by The Washington Post .

With the spike in cases occurring in the United States and the presence of the more contagious variant of Omicron, parents are hopeful that Pfizer and federal regulators will soon be able to provide a vaccine for the youngest age group.

Previously, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that children aged six months to two years who were given two doses of the vaccine at one-tenth the strength of the adult dose, produced an immune response comparable to that of youth ages 16 to 25.

But among children ages two to four, the response was less strong. The setback prompted the company to test a third, low-dose injection in toddlers. (*)
